This case study will help provide valuable insights as to how we help you from start to finish.

Background:

An Avionics supplier collaborated with E3 Displays to finalize two new enhanced display assembly designs that would be used in a flight instrument system. The assemblies would be used for small, large, and military aircraft. The final display assembly would need to be supported for many years, so the longevity of the product was a crucial focal point.

Design and Fabrication That Performs.

Challenge:

Design, develop, and manufacture a ruggedized assembly that can be viewed in direct sunlight, passes Mil Std high altitude tests, and is functional at low and high temps for pilot navigational use.

The Heater Glass requirements were extremely unique in that the resistance (and therefore the ITO thickness) was sized non-standard because of safety considerations dictated from the customer.

The Result:

Our team provided an optically bonded assembly consisting of an LCD to a heater cover glass in both a 5” size and 10.4” size using our proprietary optical bonding adhesive. We specified and procured all component material to support these display assemblies. To reduce sunlight reflection from the LCD front metal bezel, it is removed for powder coating before optical bonding.

During qualification and testing, the bonded display assembly easily passed the Mil Std and Avionics requirements for altitude testing.  Although not a requirement for product acceptance, the customer decided to test the assembly to a maximum altitude. The E3 proprietary optical bonding adhesive passed at this altitude as well.

After eliminating all but one supplier candidate for the heater requirements, we collaborated with our customer to design a custom coated glass with the desired AR and ITO. The cover glass wires and ITO coating are electrically isolated from LCD sheet metal. The glass also has a Black Dielectric Mask printed on the border.

Through this process we released a new E3 Materials formulation for this specific product line. Furthermore, our client success means our success and that’s why we have been able to establish and maintain multiple long-lasting relationships within the avionic industry.
